Protocols: Evening Primrose Oil (Oenothera biennis L)


Description: Oil from wildflower plant native to United States. Long history of use in England and Germany primarily for premenstrual syndrome.

Method of Action: Pharmacological constituents of interest are cis-linoleic acid, cis-y-linolenic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid and steric acid.

Indications and Usage: Attention Deficit Disorders; Arthritis; Premenstrual Syndrome; Benign Fibrocystic Breasts; Diabetic Neuropathy; Autoimmune Disorders (Arthritis, Fibromyalgia; Multiple Sclerosis); Schizophrenia.

Contraindications: Do not use this product if you are pregnant or lactating without first seeking advice from your physician. Should not be used by persons with Bipolar Disorder. Should not be used with anticonvulsants or in persons who suffer from seizure disorders because Evening Primrose may lower seizure threshold in some persons.

Dosage and Administration: Six to eight grams of GLA daily in two divided doses.

Clinical Effect In: Six to eight weeks.

Adverse Reactions: Stomach upset. Take with food. If you suspect that an herb or other supplement is making you sick, call the FDA's MedWatch hotline at 800-332-1088 or contact the agency via its website at http://www.fda.gov/medwatch.

Known Interactive Effects: Should not be used in conjunction with phenothiazines, nonsterioidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids, beta-blockers, and anticoagulants.

Additional Considerations: Black currant oil and borage oil are also natural sources of GLA. All promote healthy growth of skin and hair. Consult nutritionist to learn about foods high in EFAs and those that decrease effectiveness of EFA supplements.
