About Mind/Body Consultant Services & Protocols

Protocols: Phenylalanine

Description: Amino acid precursor of norepinephrine and dopamine, both excitatory neurotransmitters.

Method of Action: Raises norepinephrine and dopamine levels in brain.

Indications and Usage: L-phenylalanine can be helpful for depression. D-phenylanlanin can prevent the breakdown of brain's natural narcotics and may be helpful with chronic pain conditions. Mixture of D-phenylalanine and L-phenylalanine (DLPA) is less likely than L and D forms alone to raise blood pressure.

Contraindications: Do not use this product if you are pregnant or lactating without first seeking advice from your physician.

Dosage and Administration: Immediately upon awaking in morning (about 1 hour before breakfast) take 1,500 milligrams of DEPA, 100 milligrams of B-6, 500 milligrams of Vitamin C with a piece of fruit or small glass of juice. If you have high blood pressure initially take 100 milligrams of DLPA.

Clinical Effect In: Thirty to sixty minutes.

Adverse Reactions: Will raise blood pressure in some individuals. Should not be taken by individuals with cardiac problems or hypertension without close medical monitoring. If you suspect that an herb or other supplement is making you sick, call the FDA's MedWatch hotline at 800-332-1088 or contact the agency via its website at http://www.fda.gov/medwatch.

Known Interactive Effects: Do not use if you are taking medications, herbs or enzymes which might contribute to, or be used to treat depression without specific advice from your physician.

Additional Considerations: It is recommended to follow a low-protein, higher carbohydrate diet to help break out of depression. Be especially careful about alcohol and any recreation drugs. Although they may provide a temporary sense of relief, if used regularly, they're likely to increase depression to dangerous levels. Addiction to coffee and other forms of caffeine can also interfere with normal moods and make depression worse. Be sure to get regular, physical exercise - 45 minutes of aerobic activity most days - itself an antidepressant.

Warnings: The information above is provided for educational purposes and may not be construed as a medical prescription or as a substitute for the advice of your physician. Do not use this product without first consulting your physician especially if you are pregnant or lactating. Be advised that some herbs and dietary supplements can cause severe allergic reactions in some individuals and may also have an adverse result in conjunction with other medications, or treatments. You should regularly consult your physician in matters regarding your health and particularly in respect to symptoms and conditions which may require diagnosis or medical attention. Reevaluate use of this product after 6 months.
