About Mind/Body Consultant Services & Protocols

Protocols: Phosphatidylserine

Description: Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a naturally occurring phospholipid which is found in the cell membrane of a wide variety of organisms including the human brain. PS has clearly been demonstrated to be involved in the modulation of neuronal excitability, message transduction and neurotransmitter activity including catecholamines and acetylcholine release, NMDA receptor density and muscarinic receptor density.

Method of Action: Various laboratory and clinical studies have demonstrated that chronic oral administration of Phosphatidylserine (PS) counteracts stress-induced activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in humans. Administration of PS blunts ACTH and cortisol responses to stress without affecting the rise in growth hormone or prolactin. Deficiencies in methyl donors such as SAMe, folic acid, vitamin B-12, or essential fatty acids can result in an inability of the brain to make sufficient PS.

May work by improving brain cell fluidity. Does not appear to alter levels of serotinin or other monoamine neurotransmitters. Has same beneficial effects on memory regardless of etiological cause.
