Protocols: Lemon Balm (Melissae officinalis L)


Description: Contains the fresh dried leaf of Melissa officinalis. Leaf contains at least 0.05 percent essential oil based on the dried herb.

Method of Action: Main sedative components are citronella, citral a, and citral b as well as other mono-and sesquiterpenes.

Indications and Usage: Mild Anxiety; Insomnia; Functional gastrointestinal complaints.

Contraindications: Do not use this product if you are pregnant or lactating without first seeking advice from your physician. None known.

Dosage and Administration: Normally taken in tea form 1.5 to 4.5 grams daily.

Clinical Effect In: Immediate

Adverse Reactions: None known. Safety in pregnancy and lactation has not been established. No liver toxicity found during in vitro testing. If you suspect that an herb or other supplement is making you sick, call the FDA's MedWatch hotline at 800-332-1088 or contact the agency via its website at http://www.fda.gov/medwatch.

Known Interactive Effects: Can be combined with valerian root, chamomile, passion flower and hops. Do not use with other over-the-counter, or prescription sleep aids.
